Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who prefers selfies, hates getting her photo taken, and loves me unconditionally! Thanks for always agreeing to my crazy adventures! I can’t wait to see you in June!
Is this Barcelona? Or Italy?? 🇮🇹
Palermo isn’t shiny and new like some European cities, but it’s still beautiful and full of culture! Imperfection is beauty.
Looking for great views of Palermo?? Visit Chiesa di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria! This beautiful church has a rooftop that looks out over the city, as well as over the Fountain of Shame. The good news - it’s an easy climb! The even better news - the complex has a bakery where you can buy cannolis and pastries made from recipes from the monastery! You can access the church, bakery (and rooftop climb) from Piazza Bellini. For more check out my blog about Palermo. ~ link in profile.
The busy, narrow alleys of the Ballaro Market are one of the most authentic areas to see in Palermo. Meandering through the market will appeal to your senses! It’s so much more than just fruits, vegetables, and meat - there’s street food, olives, cheeses, desserts, fresh squeezed pomegranate juice (so good!), candies, liqueur, and all sorts of gifts and treats! They even make the cannoli filling right in front of you. Check out my blog post about Palermo for more about the market and the city!
One of the gems of Palermo is Fontana Pretoria, also known as the Fountain of Shame. Sculpted in 1553, it was purchased and then arrived in Palermo in 644 pieces. When it was reassembled, it was actually put together differently than the original design. The nickname comes from the nude statues; the nuns from a nearby church had a direct view of the fountain from their windows, and were disturbed by the naked sculptures. They would take their clothes to the fountain and “dress” the statues. The locals were also outraged - the fountain was quite a scandal! A gate was later placed around the statue to stop people from putting clothes on the statues. I love my Sicilian roots, but this story makes me laugh. My Italian-American family does find some interesting things to get upset about (in a very persistent way!). I guess I know where my stubbornness comes from!🇮🇹
Spotted the cutest little Fiat walking around Noto, Sicily. If you know me, you know my husband is a car guy who spent the last few years restoring a Triumph. All I did was say “that car is cute” and now he’s Google searching classic Fiats to fix up. 😩🙄
Save this post if you want to have the most delicious arancina in Palermo!
Easter Monday, but make it a different John & Paul. ⛪️
